Read the Keemlaw build story of Smiffys snack bar, how an empty portacabin was turned into a commercial kitchen, which today serves hot food to shoppers in Strood, Kent.
In July 2018 an empty portacabin unit arrived, with just a sandwich panel at the Keemlaw workshop, the role of Keemlaw’s engineers was to design, manufacture and install a bespoke commercial kitchen to deliver the very popular ‘Smiffys’ snack bar menu.
Keemlaw’s experience in bespoke design and manufacturing of commercial kitchens spans over 45 years. Their specialist knowledge enables them to design and build the ideal catering solutions when space is limited to deliver operationally. Fitting equipment needs into a small kitchen can be challenging, but not impossible. It is important to achieve an efficient workflow, so the kitchen can cope when demand is high.
Smiffys’ kitchen was equipped with: wall cladding, sink unit, work benches, service counter, floor and wall storage units, equipment stands and a ventilation system (extract canopy). All the items were designed and manufactured from stainless steel to meet the snack bar’s menu requirements, as well as providing an efficient and comfortable work environment. The design accommodated a griddle, fryer, bain marie hot cupboard and refrigeration unit.
The manufacture and installation of the kitchen was all completed at the Keemlaw workshop, causing minimal disruption to the client. On completion of the kitchen, the portacabin was loaded onto a lorry, using a lorry mounted crane and the five-tonne unit was then transported and lifted into its final position at Strood retail park ready to go.
Keemlaw engineers worked very closely with the café owner to create the ideal catering solution. Keemlaw pride themselves on offering a bespoke service, where no detail is too small.
Sam, owner and chef of Smiffys snack bar said: “It’s been great, the layout of the new kitchen works really well, everything is in the right place. Having a bespoke design and build has proved invaluable, despite only having a small space the kitchen has been designed exactly how I want it. The layout of the kitchen makes the most of the space available. Its improved efficiency, which means our customers spend less time queuing.”
Portacabins are incredibly multifunctional and are ideal structures for long term catering establishments. Portacabins provide design flexibility to create a bespoke catering facility, fully plumbed and fitted with kitchen equipment to meet the catering offering.
